ST.PETERS CONNECTION

By Brian Sanderson

There are some grounds who make a extra effort to visit during the cricket season. One of these is St. Peters School in York. This week was the forty sixth Cricket Festival   and to day was the final match against Durham Academy. When myself and Bob Procter arrived John Winn was peacefully reading a book and watching Yorkshire bat.

There was a good crowd today with sunny day.The star of the Yorkshire batting was Toby Thorpe , who was from Scholes CC  (Bradford League ) and scored  a excellent sixty seven. There is a lunch break at 1.15  and  above is the Yorkshire score.

During the lunch time I went into the pavilion and saw a photograph Brian Sellers, ex Yorkshire captain  of the 1930,s.

Yorkshire struggled to score to 172 and Durham were batting well as I left the ground as I was going to Headingley in the evening.

On a sunny evening I went to the Stadium to watch Yorkshire play Durham in 20/ 20 match  .Durham won the toss and soon were in trouble at 49 for 4 in front of a good crowd.Durham then consolidated as Clark brought up his fifty.

Hastings, Durham overseas player, then scored 43 of 12 balls including 3 sixes and 5 fours  whilst Clark finished on  91 off 57 balls in total of 191. Somebody would have to bat well.

This person was Johny Bairstow, ex St. Peters pupil, who went on to score 92 off 59 balls including 4 sixes and 8 fours.. Holding out late in the innings , Bairstow left Jack Leaning and Tim Bresnan 29 to win off 21
balls, but Bresnan clubbed two sixes to complete the win  with seven balls to spare. You have to also mention Jack Leaning, York CC  player, who scored 39 of 31 balls. A very entertaining night finished of with fireworks not in celebration of my birthday.
