Bits and Pieces

Posted by Tony Hutton

The last two weeks have been quite eventful, both on a cricket watching level and for me personally. It is hard for me to know where to start, but I suppose it must be at Scarborough on 16th June where Yorkshire second XI fielded a star studded side including Lyth, Lees and Maxwell, the Australian. Unfortunately they all failed with the bat in the first innings and Maxwell got another duck. It was left to the two youngsters, Will Rhodes with 124 not out and Carl Carver with 53 not out to rescue the side.

The next day I was back at Weetwood, watching the all conquering Leeds/Bradford University side fall at the last fence in the BUCS 50 over competition semi-final against Loughborough. With their high scoring talisman, Billy Root, having a rare failure with only six runs, a total of 196-5 for the home side did not seem enough.

So it proved with Loughborough winning by 3 wickets with plenty of overs to spare and going on to win the final of this competition at Kibworth the following week.

Then it was back to Scarborough for the last day of the second XI match, this time the big names came good and although Alex Lees did not look quite back to his best he made 78 not out. Maxwell played as only he can racing to 97 off only 90 balls and really giving his wicket away with two wild swings at the end as Yorkshire beat Derbyshire seconds by eight wickets.

Saturday 20th June was a close to home day with the Academy narrowly losing to Appleby Frodingham after slow left armer Logan had taken 5-43 in the visitors total of 184 all out. With 60 overs in which to get the runs the Academy finished just 14 short after Carver continued his good batting with top score of 38.

On the same day Adel had a good home win over Illingworth. Opening bat Chris Rowley scored 106 for Adel and Leeds Becket university coach Andy Laws 75.  Chasing 219 Illingworth were in the hunt but a fine spell of 6-45 by captain Nick Smith earned a 44 run victory. Nice to see Illingworth Chairman Andrew Smith again - I always remember his excellent book on the history of Illingworth cricket club.

While this game was going on an incredible Dales Council match was taking place on the adjoining second ground at Adel. Visitors Drighlington made 316-6 in their 45 overs, their number four, Bhaven Mistry, making 150 not out. Adel's third eleven were not downhearted and made another remarkable total of 275-7 after being 76-6 at one stage. Opener Steve Tilley played the anchor role with 90 not out, but star of the show was number eight Malik Noon who made 120.

Also managed a couple of school games with MCC, firstly at Woodhouse Grove school always a pleasant place to visit, with the MCC captain Paul Hutchinson a little too conservative in his declaration at 266-7, leaving the school only 45 overs in which they scored a creditable 181-8. The following day, en route back from a reunion in Newcastle, managed to see almost the last hour of St Peter's York v MCC and the school winning an exciting match with the last pair together.

Woodhouse Grove v MCC

Throw in Yorkshire's innings victory over Notts at Headingley, Leeds Bradford's win at Lord's thanks to Billy Root, two women's county games both won by Yorkshire and finally the highest ever seventh wicket partnership in English county cricket by Bairstow and Bresnan at Durham - not a bad couple of weeks!
