HARROGATE CRICKET PLAY AND TALK

By Brian Sanderson ,

Today I decided to go to Harrogate to see Yorkshire Seconds against Warwickshire Seconds in a three day match.Yesterday Yorkshire had beated them by 44 runs in a fifty over match at York.The weather forecast was rain at 4 PM. One of the reasons I like second team matches it gives you chance to met up with other PCW. As I parked by car I was joined by the Huddersfield section of PCW  and especially Peter France after his operation.

As Yorkshire were batting we were joined by Ron Deaton who mention two interesting facts about Harrogate;

1- Maurice Leyland birthday was on 20 July and he would have been 115. He is Harrogate  Yorkshire famous player and the pavilion has some of his cricket memorabilia.

2-As Glenn Maxwell, Yorkshire Overseas player and a Australian. Ron said that the a number of famous Australian sides had played on this ground. Looking back at the records the the first Australian side was in  1882 when a England X1 lost by four wickets. The English X1 captain was E.M.Grace. I have recently purchased his 1899 Wisden.

Back to the match, the morning session was dominated by Glenn Maxwell who had scored 62 out of 113 in twenty five overs. The match did not start till 11.15 due to rain during the morning and there was a short delay for rain during the first session. Talk was always about what was happening at Scarborough and as Worcester were bowled out 150 in arrears a lot of people were happy.

After lunch Glenn Maxwell went on to be out on 77 which was the same scored he obtained at York yesterday. When Maxwell was out the score was 145 for 5.

The Yorkshire total was advanced to 230 mainly due to Jordan Thompson who scored 61. When Yorkshire were out tea was taken with still 42 overs to bowl.On the television the English Ladies were beating the Australian ladies in a fifty over match.

As  I was leaving the score was 20 for 4 . An excellent opening spell of bowling by Ben Coad and  Matthew Fisher. When I arrived home Warwick were bowled out for 85  with Fishers  figures of 13-6-23-4.
No rain in the afternoon so I will come back to morrow to renew  the play and cricket talk.
