The right call

posted by John Winn

Back to Headingley this morning by a somewhat circuitous route to avoid Great Yorkshire Show traffic but in plenty of time to see Patterson and Bresnan resume the Yorkshire innings. When Bresnan fell to a smart catch over his head by Borthwick and Patterson became Wood's fifth victim Yorkshire were nine down and still 20 short of the fifth batting point. Yorkshire supporters need not have feared for not only did Sidebottom and Brooks get to the magic four hundred they went on to add 46 which equalled the second highest partnership of the innings before Sidebottom holed out to Coughlin in the deep and the innings closed on 426 leaving Durham half an hour to negotiate before lunch (chicken and bacon panini to go).

After lunch a good spell from Patterson caused both batsmen problems but it was Bresnan who made the breakthrough when he had Stoneman caught behind. Rain soon intervened however and although the players returned after a break only another five balls were possible before the rain returned with greater intent. Having unsuccessfully tried to repair my umbrella I decided to quit and whilst driving home, local radio informed me that heavy rain was falling at Headingley and the GYS, and about 20 minutes ago the ecb app confirmed that there would be no more play today.

I had spent the day in the company of David Thorpe and his friend Graeme and was interested to hear their account of their trip to Essex for the icc Europe competition which I have tried to cover on the blog. It had provided good entertainment and they would recommend such competitions to other pcws. Week beginning August 3rd there is the Under 15 Division 1 tournament at Rugby School and then at the same venue from the 12th to 17th of August it is the turn of the women's division 1.

Tomorrow looks more likely to provide a full day's play and Durham will need to bat well to avoid being in a tricky spot on the final day, although the forecast looks less promising for that.
