BRESNAN FAMILY
By Brian Sanderson
The weather was sunny so I decided to go to Methley to watch them play Townville in the Heavy Woollen Cup.Townville is about three miles from Methley and both are in the Central Yorkshire League so there was a competitive edge to the match. On enterence I received a excellent programme with a list of the players.Looking at the Townville side it included Ritchie Bresnan, Nick Bresnan and their nephew Jack Hughes so the Bresnan family were a big part of the team. Father was also at the match.
The ground has a busy road passing the ground and a railway line nearby but the above photograph shows the ground at it,s best. Townville batted first with their overseas Australian opening the batting. His name is Matthew Bremner and his nickname is Billy after the Leeds footballer .He started off with a number of big shots and was dropped. Soon he had scored 25 but the slowed down when the spinners started to bowl. He was soon out and the other opening bat had scored 20 in twenty overs. Tim Walton, ex Nottingham ,batted number 3 and tried to keep the batting together however it was Connor Harvey who helped Townville to score 237. Connor scored a good fifty with the ball landing in a number of gardens.
This is a photograph of Connor fielding and looking very tired and was suffering from cramp. Townville score was a good score but needed early wickets. This happen with Dean Woolsey been the main wicket taker. When I left after 25 overs Methley were 100 for 5 with their captain Chris Holliday having scored 50.
Townville were slight favorites . When I got home I thought I could pick up the result on Live cricket scorer but it was not on line. On the other the other semi-final Pudsey Congs beat Kirkburton and that result is on the web .So will have to wait till tomorrows paper for the result.
Just found out 9.50 Townville won by 80 runs and Holliday scored 92 runs in vain.
