Tight finish at Weetwood

Posted by Tony Hutton

After Friday's torrential downpour first impressions were that Saturday's Yorkshire league game between Yorkshire Academy and Harrogate at Weetwood would be called off. However this season's new groundsman Richard Robinson is not one to give in easily and with only an hour and a half delay it was possible to start and complete an interesting 43 overs per side game which went right to the last ball.

An early bad head injury to Australian opener Ryan resulted in a visit to hospital and although he did not return to bat we were assured that no serious damage had occurred. His fellow opener Latham went early but former Academy player Johnathon Tattersall and George Ross, the Harrogate skipper, put on a valuable century partnership before Ross was caught behind off left arm spinner Carver. Tattersall went on to complete a splendid century and was 103 not out after Potter and Foster helped him accelerate the scoring rate. Final total 239-5. Carver although somewhat expensive took four wickets.

Johnathon Tattersall celebrates his century.

The Academy started slowly and were soon 50-3 and well behind the required rate. However Hussain and Waite steadied the ship before both were dismissed in the forties. By then 161-5 suggested the Academy were facing defeat but the later batsmen had other ideas. 26 from Thompson, 25 off 20 from Fisher and finally 30 off 12 balls by Jared Warner found the Academy requiring 4 to win off the very last ball. Warner swung and missed and was stumped by Potter off Foster, the slow left armer leaving Harrogate the winners by three runs.

So two defeats in a week for the Academy, after being beaten by York on Monday. Their fight back should be applauded however and let us hope for more runs to come to be registered on the much overdue new scoreboard finally in place at Weetwood.
At long last we can tell the individual scores of the batsmen in what is after all the venue for some high class University cricket as well as the Academy
