A TRIP ROUND THE WOLDS

By Brian Sanderson,

Another Saturday drive around cricket grounds and this time in sun shine. The first ground we visited was Nafferton who were playing Kirkella in the Division 3 of the York and District Eastern Division League. The village is situated approximately two miles north-east of Driffield. and is listed in the Domesday Book. The above photograph of the ground as Tony Hutton puts it "Estate Agent "  shot of the ground.

However the pavilion looks like a sea container and there is an old container next to the pavilion. The away side won by seven wickets. After a sandwich we moved on to a more picturesque at Rudston were Grindale play.It is a small village situated between Driffield and Bridlington and again is mention in the Domesday Book.Grindale play in the Division 2 of the Becketts League and they were playing Wykeham.

The photograph above shows the local church in the background. The home side were batting and a number of sixes were hit into the neighbouring fields

Moving on to Wold Newton who were playing Hospital /Rugby Club in the Division A of the Beckett League. As we entered the gate we saw the scoreboard which shown the away side bowled out for 28. A few minutes later the match was over and a chance for a cup of tea and a piece of cake. We were able to talk to the players about the club which was established in 1860. A very friendly club.

Moving on we went to Flixton ground to have a look at the second ground as the last time we visited the match had been completed however as we arrived today tea was just ending. The third team were playing Lockton in the Division A of the Derwent Valley League. The wicket is in the middle of a football pitch but seem to be playing very well.

Moving on to Muston  were the village is situated 1.5 miles from Filey and another village listed in the Domesday Book. The Seconds were playing Ravenscar Seconds in a ground that was surrounded by a electric fence to keep the sheep out. On the computer  the result was the home side won by six wickets.

On the way back home we called into see Heselton play Flixton Seconds so we saw all three sides of the Flixton club in two hours .

Another great day seeing cricket in the Yorkshire Wolds and I would recommend it.
