600 RUNS IN A DAY. WHERE HAVE ALL THE BOWLERS GONE ?

By Brian Sanderson,

I had planned to visit Richmond to see the Durham Seconds against Nottingham in a fifty over match for the last few weeks. There should have been a three day match against the same two sides but it rained for the last two days. This was Richmond first  three day match  used by Durham  as a home fixture. Strange as it is in North Yorkshire.

As myself and Bob Procter  drove off the A1 there were signs of rain but we hoped the forecast of sun would be correct. This time and was. We park across from the ground as Nottingham started to open their innings.  As the first over was bowled Ian from Lancaster arrived via Leyburn. We obtained a seat  next to the pavilion away from the wind and was a sun trap for the day.Our view of the ground can be see above , looking towards the Castle. The view shows what a local ground should look like.

The first batsman to start scoring runs was Anuj Dal, who is England under 19 opening batsman ,who became Nottingham highest scorer with 70 but has yet to play a first team match. He and Sam Smith put on partnership of 128  in 22 overs. At this stage a large total looked on and it arrived scoring 316 for 5.

At lunchtime I had a short walk into the town square and purchased a ice cream . At this stage I thought the strong Nottingham side would win the match. The sun was still shining and we were offered  a free creamed scones which was duly eaten with gusto.
With twenty overs to go Durham were  three wickets down and the score was 149 so requiring 168 to win which I thought was too much for them. However Adam Hickey and Dylan Budge but on a partnership of  146 and with eleven balls to spare which included eight sixes.

None of the Nottingham bowlers had a economy of under five. The most economical bowler on both sides was Jamie Harrison with figures of  10-0-35-1. A run feast  of a day but it just shows the lack of bowling talent coming through in  both sides.
