GREEN WICKET IS THE TALKING POINT.

By Brian Sanderson,

An early Sunday morning start to Trent Bridge to see the first day of the Somerset Championship match.
After a good cup of coffee at £1.50, take note Yorkshire were it cost £2.00, we settled down to watch the days play from the excellent pavilion. The first impression was were was the wicket as it was the same colour as the surrounding grass. We found out later that the wicket was prepared on Saturday for the Sunday start.

Nottingham must have sighed with relief when they won the toss and fielded.First wicket of Trescothick felled to  Philander who was the best bowler on the day.One more wickets fell quickly until Hildreth and Myburgh put on a stand of 50 runs.Just before lunch three  more wickets fell with the score 101 for five.

Nottingham at this point must have thought of bowling Somerset quickly after lunch. However this was not the case Allenby and Trego both played their shots in 85 run partnership before Trego was bowled by Mullaney for 41 with the score 186 for six.

Gregory joined Allenby at the crease and they continued to attack the Nottingham bowlers with Allenby bringing his half century from 61 balls  including eight fours. The pair saw Somerset first bonus point but with the total on 229 ,Gregory was bowled by Wood for 17 .Allenby soon followed for 64 when he was caught by Taylor off  the bowling of Philander-his fourth wicket of the innings.

With the score at tea 241 for 8 we decided to go home for tea.Looking at the net Somerset scored 312 and Nottingham were 57 for 2.

Overall the Nottingham bowlers did not use the conditions well and Somerset scored at least eighty runs to many.On this wicket there will be at result subject to the weather.
