SUNNY DAY FOR A CHANGE

By Brian Sanderson,

Like John I watched a Yorkshire Cricket League match and I opted for the York against the Academy match . I went via Ripon to pick my sister up for a day in the sunshine.

You never know with the Academy want side will be put out due to  other commitments. This match they included three England under 19 players ie Mosun Hussain, Jared Warner and Karl Carver whilst on the York side they had imported Jack Leaning, the Yorkshire first teamer. Photograph above of Jack batting.

York batted first on a good batting wicket which is usually the case at York. The York opening pair of Simon Lambert and Jack Leaning soon were taking the Academy opening attack apart.which produced 39 runs in 8 overs.Liam McKendry then carried on the good work until he was caught and bowled  with the catch of the season so far by Jordan Thompson doing a double somersault and pike .
By this time York had reached  195 for 4 in the 38 th over. Thoughts were turning to a score of 280 or even  300. This did not happen with spinners Carver and Logan  bowling York out for 234 in the 51 st over. One catch to obtain Elliot wicket was achieved by coming off Carvers hand on to Thompson hand in the covers.. This is the first time I have seen this type of catch in fifty years of watching cricket.

There was a good crowd to watch Academy try to win the match and most people were confident this would happen . However the Australian opening bowler, Adam Whatley, produced his best bowling performance this season. He took the three of the first four batsman to bring the total to 79 for four in the 21 over.At this stage the match was in the balance but the York spinners finished off the match in style. These were Jack Leaning and Tom Pringle  who took seven wickets between them. The Academy finished on 127 all out in forty overs.

You have to say York were the best side but I was disappointed at Englands under 19 players.
Ben Ainsley ,Academy top scorer with 41.
