ANOTHER WET AND COLD MATCH
By Brian Sanderson,
Yesterday I was pleased to get a lift to the East Bierley which was a nice change from me driving. The club was celebrating it,s 150 year Anniversary and played their earliest games on land known as the The Shay behind the New Inn before moving to their present South View Road site.At first the ground was rented and in 1905 it was levelled and a viewing embankment created with views of the Pennines. When we arrived it was raining and the view was covered in cloud.
I first played on this ground over 40 years ago and have always found it a friendly club. There is excellent tea pavilion were we sat to watch the match. The radiators were on and it was nice an warm. The match started at 2.pm with the home side batting. The innings was built on a sound foundations given to them by openers James Ford (47) and Mark Gill (36 ) during a first -wicket stand of 86.
The innings was given further impetus by Richard Atkins (43 ), Neil Gill (43 NO ) and Danish Hussain (35 ) as left arm spinner Ben Elvidge (4 -56) proved the best Hanging Heaton bowler. East Bierley reached a total of 214 for 6 in the forty overs.
At tea John Virr ,the Hanging Heaton scorer, walked over for his tea frozen and wet as the rain was going directly into the scorebox. He finished off scoring with the computer under a table as the table was covered in rain. At this stage we decided to go home as the rain was still falling.
As last week I found Hanging Heaton had started their innings Gary Fellows made 63 but once he was out the innings went into decline as wickets were lost in the pursuit of quick runs in the gathering gloom. They finished on 191 so losing the match. This was the only match completed in the Bradford League this week
The rain is still falling as I am typing this blog.
