Leeds Varsity match

Posted by Tony Hutton

More action at Weetwood again today with Leeds University playing Leeds Beckett University for the Tommy Hardman Trophy in a T20 game.

With players from the Leeds/Bradford MCCU combined side split between the two teams a close contest was expected, but it proved something of a damp squib with no really big hitting or large scores. However, despite Leeds Beckett having the upper hand for most of the game they were pushed hard by the home side, especially when run-machine Billy Root was dismissed for only a single by a stunning one handed catch from Josh Mailing,

Earlier Leeds University made a modest 115 all out with only one ball left of their twenty overs. Harry Rouse top scored with 27 not out, but nobody else really got going. Leg spinner Nathan Hill took two valuable wickets and Ryan McKendry finished off the tail with two more. When Leeds Beckett replied victory seemed a formality but they lost two wickets for only 29, including Billy Root, and two more on reaching 70. Then Logan Weston took over and despite good bowling by Pratt and Tully, took Leeds Beckett to a relatively easy win by five wickets with three overs left.
Weston finished on 59 not out and was an obvious choice for man of the match.

Jimmy Latham takes the trophy

The formalities were completed by MCCU coach Andrew Lawson and team manager Nick Davis. Leeds Beckett skipper Jimmy Latham took the trophy before a good gathering of appreciative spectators who had contributed towards the charity CRY, Cardiac Risk in the Young, in memory of the late Tommy Hardman, who so sadly died just before his 22nd birthday in 2012.
