Scarborough Festival

Posted by Tony Hutton

Thursday 6th August - the first day of the scheduled four day Championship match between Yorkshire and Durham at North Marine Road, Scarborough. Much has already been written about this amazing game, which threatened to finish in two days, only for Maxwell and Rashid to turn the game on it's head with an incredible partnership which set Yorkshire up for a win on day three.

The wonderful weather, the large crowd and that special festival atmosphere all set up one of the most memorable games to be seen on this historic ground. Minor problems with stewarding and congestion in certain areas of the ground pale into insignificance with the continuing ebbs and flows of a fascinating game of cricket.

So many players contributed to this game it is hard to remember them all, but the bowling of Rushworth and Onions for Durham in both innings, as well as  Sidebottom and Patterson for Yorkshire in the first innings and Plunkett and Rashid in the second were all outstanding.

Durham's youngsters did well also, Pringle with 40 in the first innings and Jack Burnham on debut, after a duck first time made 50 in the second innings. After the two century makers in the second innings there were also good contributions with the bat from Bresnan, Plunkett and the unsung hero Patterson. Also good to see Graham Onions pick up his 500th first class wicket. So much to remember. The brass band may have gone but the tradition of the greatest of all cricket festivals continues.
