A DOLLOP OF CRICKET

By Brian Sanderson,

Myself, Ron Deaton and Nigel Pullen set out to visit two grounds in the Scarborough area. We arrived at the Scarborough Rugby Club at about 1.45 were Hospitals/Rugby Club were playing Wold Newton Seconds in the Division A of the Scarborough Derwent Valley Cricket League which was formed in 1921. The first photograph I took was one of the players just marking out the pitch.

The ground is a new ground based near the Rugby Union Club so there are no changing rooms .On the 16 th May we visited Wold Newton ground when they had bowled the Rugby Club out for 28.During this season the Rugby Club had been deducted 20 points for failing to raise a side on two occasions and are now second from the bottom of a league of eleven clubs. Also in this league Sewerby Thirds have resigned from the League due to lack of players.

Today the Rugby club decided to bat first with a threat of rain in the air and  rain forecast.. The rugby club scored 86 for 4 with Marcus Edwards scoring 64 before rain stopped play. It will be interesting to see if the home side will   still be playing next year.

Moving down the coast we went to Flamorough who were playing Wykeham Seconds in  Division C of the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League. In this league Cloughton Seconds have a points score of -16 because they have had to concede matches also Fylingdale Seconds resigned from the League just as the season started.

In 2013 Flamborough withdrew their first team from the Beckett League due to lack of players. This left the second team as the only team . Today the home side scored  152 for 6 with M.Garcia who has a Brazilian father score 43 not out. Later I found out Wykeham were bowled out for 136.

Move back towards to Scarborough we called in on the  Hunmanby ground were the cricket team resigned from the Derwent Valley League due to lack of players in 2014 even though  the village being one of the largest village in Yorkshire. Now the ground is used for Rugby and Football.

One of the signs of the cricket ground is a old roller laid to rest under a tree. The story of these three clubs shows cricket in Yorkshire is struggling to keep going and will the new league structure help teams like these ,I do not think so.

We failed last season to form a sustainable social Sunday team in the Holme Valley in addition to Upperthong. I know some of the league teams are using juniors to pad out their second teams. Junior sections are thriving.
I suspect there may be too much cricket and not enough bodies over 19 years of age.
Great initiatives from 'Chance to Shine' and the ECB, but where are the results?
The usual suspects are doing well (Honley and Thongsbridge), but not interested in social cricket.
