Interesting visitors

I know amongst our readers there are those lucky enough to have seen cricket at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. If you are not among that fortunate few, or even if you are, fear not for Queen's Park has come to Yorkshire this week.

The Queen's Park Cricket Club, founded 1891 are on a 21 day tour playing 13 matches including four in Yorkshire.

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:30pm they are in t20 action at Clifton Park, York where they will play York CC, other fixtures are as follows

Friday August 14th v Yorkshire II at Weetwood 50 over game with wickets pitched 11:00.

Sunday August 16th v Dunnington CC at  Common Road Dunnington York YO19 5PA 50 over game wickets pitched 12:30

Monday August 17th  v York Senior League at Sheriff Hutton Bridge, Moor Farm, Strensall, York YO32 5TX wickets pitched 11:00

While we are on the subject of fixtures the Durham Under 16 match v Lancashire provisionally arranged for tomorrow and Friday at Consett CC was playedyesterday and Monday but there is some junior cricket in County Durham this week with a two day game at Darlington, today and tomorrow between Durham and Cumberland under 15s.

Yesterday a dedicated band of pcws pitched camp at The Riverside for the opening day of the SEC match between Durham II v Yorkshire II. An interesting selection for Durham was that of Tattersall, formerly of Yorkshire. Durham, captained by Jennings who had filled his boots in the SET match on Monday, won the toss and chose to bat and KK expressed his disappointment when he was out with just 30 on the board. The rest of the day belonged to Phil Mustard, whose experience must come close to outweighing that of all the other players put together. 'Colonel' was dropped from the championship side earlier in the season but continues to open the batting in 50 over and t20 cricket and yesterday hit 144 out of 252, next highest scorer JA Tattersall with a diligent 32. Mustard hit 22 fours and most of those were echoed by 'good shot Colonel' from the south west corner.

Alan Pinkney and I left shortly before Durham were all out and Yorkshire closed on 116 for 4 off 33 overs with Stokesley's James Weighell getting two wickets. Ryan Gibson was out shortly before the close for 52.

Finally good to hear Yorkshire Chairman Steve Dennison on local radio yesterday speaking out against the ecb's cockamamie plan to reduce championship matches to twelve per season and stressing Yorkshire's (and that of other counties) opposition to the scheme. Steve made the very obvious point that championship cricket is the form of the game that produces test players, remember why four day cricket was introduced in the 1990s? Good time to reflect on that while Ashes euphoria is still flavour of the month.
