INJURY CRISIS IN DENBY DALE

By Brian Sanderson,

On a sunny morning I decided to go to Denby Dale to see a friendly 45  over match between Yorkshire u 14 and Warwickshire  u 14. The ground slopes up toward the road  and on top of the slope is a excellent view of the wicket.

One of the umpires was David Godbold and I had a chance to talk to his wife who was walking round the boundary whilst Warwick batted.I was soon joined by Malcolm and settled down to watch the cricket. It was a steady start by Warwick against some  varied bowling. The pick of the Yorkshire bowling was Harding who bowls off-spin. His figures were 3 for 27 off his nine overs.

By the inning of the innings Warwick reached 227 with Sahal Malvernkar top scoring with 42. Just before the end of the innings were joined by David Thorpe. During the innings break Brian Senior arrived to be met by John Tipley.

Just before the start of the Yorkshire innings the Warwick wicket keeper was hit below the eye so a substitute keeper was used. Also I met James Finch who was the second umpire. I first met him playing for the Yorkshire Academy about ten years ago and he now plays for Barnard Castle in the North Yorkshire South Durham League. Near the end of the Yorkshire innings a Warwick player was hit in the face when the play jumped from the edge of the all weather pitch. Yorkshire now had supplied two substitute fielders. one of the top Yorkshire batsman was Boeta Beukes who plays for Stainborough.

It came down to Yorkshire requiring five runs from two balls and nine wickets down. They failed with a run out on the fifth ball. A exciting match and good company. What more do you require . May be some programs.
