By Brian Sanderson,
My friend Andrew came up from London for four days to watch Yorkshire against Middlesex. He is a Yorkshire supporter as he was born in Harrogate.Sunday started weather wise windy but a lot better than Saturday.I brought some cricket memorabilia for the day and had a chance to talk to people about some old cricket matches.
On the field Middlesex decided to bat and soon lost their overseas player Burns to Brooks. Then there was a best stand of the innings between Robson, ex Australian and Compton, born in South Africa, of 62.We watched the innings from the Trueman stand but found it very cold.
Brooks took five wickets for 44 and Middlesex finished on 212.The wicket was very difficult with bounce and swing. Only Compton managed to score 70 but could have been out on a least three occasions.
Yorkshire innings was based round Johny Bairstow who scored a excellent 125 not out whilst other batsmen struggled. By this time we had moved into the sun for the second and third days and it was nearer the wicket.
Again the ball was swinging and keeping low on occasions.
Yorkshire reached 229 with a lend of 17. At the start of the third day both sides could have won and Middlesex had lost four wickets and by lunch had been bowled out for 229 with Will Rhodes taking the last three wickets.Soon Lees was out and Ballance and Lyth put on a stand of 71 which was the highest stand of the match which shown how difficult the wicket was and no batsman looked set.
The afternoon was very tense for the Yorkshire supporters and by 6.15 pm they were very happy to see the Yorkshire side win by four wickets and the last two batsmen Maxwell and Rhodes were clapped off the pitch.Yorkshire are now eleven points behind Durham with a match in hand.Well done the Yorkshire side.
