LONG DAY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF THE SEASON
By Brian Sanderson
As I was the last man of our trio to leave the ground, so I am doing the blog for today.
There is always a thrill to go to the first match of the season especially when the sun is shining at 9.30 in a April morning. Today was the first day of Yorkshire against Leeds and Bradford University at Headingley. Over the last few months new pylons have been built in the stadium. They did look impressive against the blue sky.
It was good to meet the Yorkshire supporters again and finding out were they had been over the winter.University won the toss and decided to bowl. Soon Will Rhodes was caught brilliantly by Wakefield, the wicket keeper, down the leg-side. The ball was swinging which caused Yorkshire problems. Lees looked the best of the early batsmen but at lunch the score was 112 for 3.
Soon two more wickets fell .Lees reaching 63 and the score was 145 for 5. It was left to this season beneficiary Rich Pyrah and Andrew Hodd to put on a partnership of 116.After they were out Patterison shown his batting skills by scoring 41 in 46 balls. The sun was still shining when Yorkshire declared on 329 for 9 off 82 overs. Alex Lilley took 4 wickets for 65 and was the best bowler.
The opening partnership of 46 unbeaten between Bullan and Thompson ,ended the day with no problems.
Leaving the ground ,I had some dinner and went back to the ground for a Northern Cricket Society meeting .The speaker was Mark Arthur, the Yorkshire Chief Executive who talked about the future of cricket and the improvements of Headingley and Park Avenue.
