IT PAYS TO READ BOOKS
By Brian Sanderson,
On Saturday myself and Bob Procter went over to Old Trafford for the Memorabilia Society Auction.
Bob had purchased some books from William Roberts and one of them was above. Before the auction started I had a chance to read some chapters from the book.On page 35 there is a quote from Lord Hawke about Charles Olliverre who was the first West Indian to play for Derbyshire. and one of my favourite players.
His quote is as follows
Ollivierre ,a man of colour, shot out my middle stump into the air before I had scored . He was so beside himself with joy that he promptly turned a somersault on the pitch , and then both umpires and players enthusiastically shook hands with him. Some of the crowd lost their heads with delight ,beating the ground with their sticks ,yelling ,throwing their hats in the air and embracing each other out of sheer satisfaction.
You could just see Stuart Broad doing that . You can read more about Olliiverre life by Goggling his name and reading article in the Derbyshire Life dated 25 th May 2010..
Another book Bob purchased was Arthur Mailey book 10 for 66 and all that. Recently I purchased autographs of Austrailans on the 1921 Tour. The signatures were on a Buffet Train Menu card on their way back from Attleborough. They had played a friendly match against L.R.Robinson X1. Among the players were Mailey who played in the match. The comments on The Times for this match was that the captain Mr. Armstrong considered that the wicket was not fast enough for Mr. Mailey so that no judgement can be formed of his ability on a slow wicket.
The book describes that tour and would a modern side play a two friendly match today against a non championship side. I do not think so and how times have changed so quickly.
