Yorkshire only tie

By Brian Sanderson

Yorkshire were playing Leicestershire at Fartown from the
16 June to the 18th which created Yorkshire history.

Yorkshire started well with Vic Wilson scoring 138 out
of a total of 351.Wilson looked uncertain in his beginnings
especially against Walsh's spin but he grew in confidence
his shots increased in power until the fieldsmen near the
wicket were glad enough for the ball to pass out of range.
The half drive ,half cut which was his special delight
brought him the majority of his 15 4's and he eliminated
the slow outfield by pulling two 6's.His century was
completed in 3 hours and 10 minutes.

When Leicester batted Maurice Tompkin scored his
highest championship score of the season with 149
out of total of 328.He was also a useful footballer
who played for Leicester, Bury and Huddersfield
at either outside or inside right. The top wicket taker
was Johnny Wardle with four wickets.

On the third day Yorkshire was soon bowled out for
113 with Charles Spencer taking 9 for 63 which was
his best first class figures. When Leicester batted again
they they were 6 for 72 at one stage. But Munden and
Walsh put a stand of 51 to bring them close to victory.

However they were left to score nine runs of the last over
with Wardle bowling .On the last ball the scores were
level ,Spencer played the ball down the pitch and went
for the run which would have given Leicester the victory.
Instead ,Wardle picked up swiftly and threw down the wicket
,Spencer was run out.

Kilburn wrote about the finish in the following way
"No match could have had a more fictional finish in its facts.
No imagination could develop more than a tie with the last
wicket falling to the last ball of the announcement last over.
The breathlessness of it will demand days of recovery for
those who saw ,and they are never likely to see the like again."
