Tony Lock's series

By Brian Sanderson

I am very interested in scorecards as they all tell the tale
of the match. This one is of the second Test against New
Zealand on 19 -21 June 1958.

The match began in sad circumstances with the announcement
of  the news of the death of Douglas Jardine in Switzerland.
Above is a photograph of Yorkshire drinking to Jardine because
of the Ashes victory in 1932.

Peter May won the toss and batted. M.J.K.Smith batted for three
hours and fifty minutes for 47 runs. By the end of the first day
England struggled to 237 for 7.

During the night and next morning heavy rain fell and play
started at 3.20 in the afternoon. Then wickets went down in a heap
thirteen in all in a space of two hours and twenty minutes .Lock
and Laker took nine wickets in a total of 47 runs. This is still
the third lowest total at Lords.

More rain fell on Friday which left the pitch and outfield in a
sodden state. Lock took four wickets for twelve runs when the
Kiwis were bowled out for 74 so losing by an innings and
103 runs.

Lock went on to take 34 wickets in the series and New Zealand
not scoring a century in the series. They only won seven matches
in the tour .Comment in Wisden that they had suffered from
over emphasis on defence and should allow their young batsmen
to hit the ball.
