Sunny Scarborough

By Brian Sanderson

The above photograph is of the M.C.C. and Yorkshire sides at
Scarborough on the 1 September 1954 with sunshine on all three
days.

A unusual player on the M.C.C. side was the future Yorkshire
captain Billy Sutcliffe who opened the innings for them. He was
top scorer in the first innings with 54 out of a total of 143.
Bob Appleyard caused the problem with his off spin by
taking seven wickets.

When Yorkshire batting they struggled against Robin Marlar.
The Sussex off break bowler took one hundred wickets in a
season four times .From 1955 to 1959 he captained Sussex.
Also he was a well known writer and commentator. He took
five wickets in this innings in a total of 165.

In M.C.C. second innings Reg Simpson, the Nottingham
opener, hit 71 consisting of four sixes and eight fours.
Doug Insole was next highest scorer with 45 in a total
of 225.Again Appleyard caused problems taking five
wickets. The photograph above is of him in 1951 coming
off at Scarborough after taking his 200th wicket in the
season.

Yorkshire required 204 to win and soon suffered early
set backs but Close and Watson hit the last 94 runs without

being separated. The photograph above is of Close and
Lowson getting their caps at Scarborough. Happy memoirs
for a lot of the players of Scarborough.
