Statham,s 200th Test wicket

By Brian Sanderson

Recently I purchased the scorecard in respect of England v
Australia Second test at Lords 22 June to 27  June 1961.
It was a match were pace men on both sides controlled
the game ,taking 33 of 35 wickets. The Australian side
was captained by Neil Harvey as Benaud was injured.
Whilst the England captain was Colin Cowdrey.

England won the toss and batted which did not help
England ,for they were soon in difficulties. The Australian
attack was Davidson ,McKenzie ,in his first test,Misson,
who was in his last test and Mackay.

England a disappointed total of 206 even though Murray
and Illingworth fought hard.

When Australia batted Statham took his 200 th test wicket
when McDonald was bowled. a feat at that time previously
accomplished for England only by Alec Bedser. The second
day belong to Lawry who batted for six hours and ten minutes
for 130. in a total of 340.The last two wickets added 102 and
practically ended England,s chances of victory.

Barrington was the only batsman in the second innings to
put up any kind of determined effort. He batted three hours
and twenty minutes for his 66. McKenzie ended the innings
by taking three wickets in twelve balls and finishing with
five for 37 off 29 overs.Start of a great career. Grout held
five catches in the innings and eight in the test for the second
time of his career .During the second innings he claimed his
100th test victim.

Australia just needed 69 for victory but soon ran into trouble
against Statham and Trueman, who made the most of the lively
pitch.Burge was dropped on a difficult catch by Lock ,Australia
would have been 37 for five at lunch .However Burge won the
match taking two fours off Statham so winning the match by five
wickets.

Statham went on to take 252 Test wickets in 70 tests and is still
placed 9th in English wicket takers.
