Cricket trivia

By Brian Sanderson

Looking through The Cricket Statistician Journal of October 1982.I noticed an interesting article by Tony Woodhouse.

William Graves Walgate was a farmer at West Hill Farm Aldbrough near Hull and after a barren first marriage he married the sister of his late wife ,who gave him fifteen children - twelve sons(one dying at birth)and three daughters. All were born at West Hill Farm and all were enthusiastic cricketers and in 1884 a match was arranged between teams comprising the eleven surviving brothers and one representing Rise near Hull. The match was played on August 4th ,1884 at Rise Park , Holderness. This was the seat of a Mr William Bethell who was  an uncle of the Walgates. The match took a lot of  organising since several of the brothers had, by now, dispersed and was the only time they appeared together. The brothers won by three wickets .

Arnold ("Duck" ) Oehlman, the Toowoomba ,left arm pace bowler was involved in an incident when playing for Toowoomba against M.C.C.in 1924. Oehlman ran out England  opener Herbert Sutcliffe backing up yards out of his crease ,when the non striker was 90. Eddie Kann, the wicket keeper said that Sutcliffe treated us in a cavalier manner MCC.skipper Gilligan agreed with the action of the bowler. He said Sutcliffe would not have done it in a Test.It taught him a lesson.

I would have liken to be there at the incident and seen Sutcliffe's
reaction.
