Cricket behind wire
By Brian Sanderson
Recently I purchased three scorecards on ebay. They are
matches played in Hohenfels Prison Camp in 1943.
The camp was situated in Bavaria and was called Stalag 383.
At this time there were about 4000 N.C.O's as prisoners in
forty huts.
The first match was on the 28 and 29 August, New Zealand
against England. It seems that A.Wood kept a ball to ball
record on the scorecard. New Zealand scored 154 .
Then England batted and scored 370.
Then New Zealand were bowled out for 111. The two captains
were Browne For New Zealand and Wilkins for England.
I can not find that any of the players played first class cricket.
The second match was on the 4th and 5th of September between
Australia and England. Australia scored 259 in their first
innings whilst England were bowled out for 186.
In the second innings Australia scored 241 and England
were bowled out for 116. The Australian captain was
O'Brien.
There is a book on Stalag 383 but it costs £200 which I
think is expensive. In the meanwhile I will be doing
some more research about the players .
