Cricket in Egypt in 1941

By Brian Sanderson

Further to my last post, I purchased two receipts in respect of
the Alexandria Cricket Club for 1942 and 1943 from the same
person who had the Todmorden membership cards.
Alexandria club was established in 1851 by English settlers
and is still in existance now.

The other major cricket club in Egypt is the Gezira which is
located on an island in the River Nile and has been established
since 1882 and was a club for British Army Officers.

The scorecard I have is in respect of Gezira Sporting Club
against Australian I.FX1 on the 10 -11 October 1941.
The county players for Gezira was

W.R Ford Combined Services

C.Bray Essex and noted sport journalist for The Daily
Herald.

Freddie Brown Surrey and future England captain

G.M.Hewan Berkshire

Bill Bowes Yorkshire and England.

The Australian side was captained by Hassett and contained
mainly Test and State players.

England batted first and scored 124 with Alex Hurwood
taking 7 for 61 bowling his medium off breaks. He was
based in Brisbane and had played two Test matches in 1930.

Australia replied by scoring 337 with R.H.Robinson
scoring 119 not out on the second day.

England reply was poor just scoring 132 with a W.A.R Sumner
scoring 31.So Australia winning easily.

In Bill Bowes autobiography , there is no mention of the match.
On the June 20 1942 he was one of the 20000 prisoners taken at
Tobruk .He was moved to Chieti were he gives a description
of a cricket match under again the leadership of Freddie Brown
