Yorkshire Academy retain the Yorkshire League Cup

Posted by Tony Hutton

Following York's success in winning the league at Harrogate yesterday, hopes were high for a league and cup double at the expense of the cup holders, Yorkshire Academy. The ground at Clifton Park was a picture, with a clear blue sky which lasted all day. Play got underway at 11 a.m. to the surprise of some, but the crowd grew steadily all day and enjoyed the peace and tranquillity away from the hurly burly of Headingley.

York's high scoring opening pair seemed to be progressing well until two wickets fell with the score on 38. First Australian Adam Whatley was well caught by Imtiaz of skipper Matthew Waite's bowling and then Simon Lambert was caught by Harry Brook off the bowling of Jordan Thompson. This brought in the McKendry brothers who struggled against some short pitched bowling.

The crowd enjoy the sunshine

The introduction of the Academy's left arm spinner James Logan, who has been in excellent form recently, brought the dismissal of both brothers clean bowled with the score then 67-4 in the 20th of the allotted 50 overs. Worse was to follow with Collins caught behind of the lively Nathan Firn for 0 and then as we were asked to walk another wicket on a circuit of the ground, we actually obtained three more!

Logan had Booth lbw to make it 83-6, then Waite had Brooks and Kay both caught behind by Read, who looked efficient throughout, to make it 87-8. The Academy seemed home and dry but perhaps became somewhat over confident and allowed York back off the hook. Pringle and Elliot putting on 52 for the ninth wicket and then Elliot and Burn a further 21 for the last wicket. Tom Pringle top scored with 36 and Charlie Elliot made 30. Waite finished off the innings to take 4-39 and Logan had splendid figures of 3-26 in his ten overs.

York were finally all out for 160 quite a reasonable score after 87-8 and perhaps throught they were back in the game. However Callis and Hussain played sensibly and put on a valuable opening stand of 83 in 19 overs before Hussain was caught behind off Pringle when the leg spinner made a rather belated appearance into the attack.
Callis was joined by the youngest member of the team, Harry Brook, who also played very sensibly taking no risks until he tried to hit over the top and was caught at mid off for 14.
Callis and Hussain put on a good opening stand

Callis reached a hard earned half century and it was left to skipper Matthew Waite to end the match with a flourish, hitting six fours and two sixes to see the Academy home by eight wickets with almost twelve overs left. A very convincing win by the young Academy side against the league champions, who looked a bit jaded possibly by over celebrating their league title last night. There did seem some ill feeling between certain players during the game, but it was handshakes all round at the end before the winners posed for their victory photographs.
