By Brian Sanderson,
Further to my blog yesterday morning, I sent off for a forty-five minutes drive to Elscar. The match was the Yorkshire Academy against Methley in the Black Sheep Trophy over 50 overs a piece. I settled down to watch the match from the pavilion end as Methley batted first. A 96 year old Tickhill supporter sat next to me.Whilst we were talking it seems he was involved in the Second World War and worked as a postman. These reminded of my father has he worked in the Post Office and was in 8th Army fighting in Africa and Europe.
Bullington and Broadbent put on a good partnership of 58 in sixteen overs. The Academy bowler who bowled very well was James Logan left arm spin bowler. He bowled his ten overs for 3 for 32 and helped to contain the Methley batsmen.
The Methley last few runs were helped by Chavez Younas who played a few matches for the Academy a few years ago.
He scored 34 not out to help to bring Methley total up to 220 in the fifty overs. The thought was the Academy did well to restrict Morley to this total after a good start.
There was a good crowd on a sunny afternoon to see Gibson and Callis opening the batting for the Academy which did not have the strongest batting line up. Ryan Gibson started quickly by scoring 37 before he was out on the total of 48.
It was left to Callis and Hussain to put together a partnership of 112. As you will see from the above photograph of the scoreboard Callis struggled to keep the score moving. Marcus Warmsley bowled a great spell of bowling with figures of 10-4-17-0. Gradually the two batsman increased the pace of the innings.
Mosun Hussain who has played for England under 19 ,used his experience to score 85 not out with 7 fours and 2 sixes. His innings helped the Academy to win the match by six wickets ,their scoring was 221 for 4.
This was the second one day final the Academy have won after the Yorkshire League Cup Final at York.
Well done all the players and may they have a good future.
