STROLL IN THE PARK FOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE

By Brian Sanderson.

This morning I walked up to Headingley Stadium on a sunny Sunday morning arriving at the gate just before 9.00AM when the gates were due to open. As usual at Headingley they were late opening which caused a long queue. I do wish they would be more organised.

The cricket started with Glos winning the toss and fielded. Yorkshire changed their team by replacing Brooks by Pyrah. Lyth and Lees opened the batting and put on  103. Lees struggled during the partnership and was caught on bowled by Howell for 21. Then Leaning came in three which was a surprise and in twenty balls could only score 8.

Lyth scored 96  in 88 balls with ten fours and one six. Yorkshire at one stage were 198 for 3 in the 36 th over. In the last 15 overs Yorkshire lost 6 for 65  which could only bring the total to 263 for 9. The thought in the Long Room was the total was at least forty runs short  of par.

There was a good crowd of 7000 to watch Michael Klinger put on a master class. He had been flown in from Perth especially to play this match.

Klinger is a former  Australian under 19 captain but has played no test matches. He went on and shared a crucial unbroken third wicket stand of 177 in 28 overs with Hamish Marshall as they advanced the score from 90 for 2 in the 21 st over.It was a Glos record partnership for any wicket against Yorkshire in Lit A cricket.

Yorkshire bowling was not good enough without Sidebottom, Brooks and Plunkett. so they  were not good enough on the day.

So now on to Lords on Wednesday when hopefully they  win the Championship.
