SLOW DAY AT WINDY WEETWOOD

By Brian Sanderson,

Looking out of the window this morning ,the rain was coming down heavily so I wondered if it was worth the visit to Weetwood. There was the start of a two day match between Yorkshire under 17 and Lancashire under 17.As I cricket watcher you usually give it a chance. On arriving at the ground the rain was still falling but the umpires seemed to want to play. So the clouds cleared and play started at 11.45 with Yorkshire batting.

This match is on Total Cricket scorer so we were able to find the players on both sides as there was no  scorecards.Tony , Jenny and Malcolm were already there trying to get away from the strong wind blowing across the ground.

Next to arrive was David Thorpe from Huddersfield who was surprised by the rain as there was none in Huddersfield. Another visitor was Ralph Middlebrooke who was there to meet Catherine Bourne, the daughter of the late Mick Bourne, as they were organising a match in tribute to Mick at Arthington in September.

The match was progressing slowly with Lancashire bowlers winning the contest. The only batsmen to stay for sometime was D.Hussain who batted for 194 minutes to score 63 when he was out the score was 128 for 8 in the 57 th over just over 2 runs an over.It was left to the last wicket to produce the best stand of the innings of 51 with Ed Morrison becoming the second highest scorer with 33.

After 91 overs Yorkshire innings finished on 224. The best Lancashire bowler was Brownlow with 3 for 43  in 14.1 overs.Another bowler of note was Parkinson with figures of 22.1-13-33-2. He is also opening the Lancashire innings.

There is a match at Pudsey St. Lawerence tomorrow where the Yorkshire under 15 are playing Buckinghamshire.
A photograph of Hussain coming off the pitch after his innings. I  do wish they would smile
