A bad week for the White Rose County despite the success of their top players for England in the one day internationals. One can only continue to wonder at their success last season when the side was also decimated by Test calls.
As I suggested in my last blog the final day at Scarborough did indeed bring plenty of surprises and Middlesex were obviously good value for their win. It will be interesting to see how the last match of the season goes when the two sides meet again at Lord's.
One can only sympathise with the effect not only of the loss of so many players through international calls and injuries, which of course permeates the club at all levels. Second team players have to step up to the first team, Academy players step up to the second team and the Academy this week had to field a very young side against a slightly older and more experienced Scotland Development squad at Weetwood.
Brian has already reported on the Second XI game with Lancashire at Todmorden, where I was able to see the last day. Despite facing a far more experienced Lancashire side, notably the bowling of Stephen Parry, there were bright spots. The second innings fight back by Elliott Callis with 45 and Mathew Waite with 67 for instance.
This was followed by a brave ninth wicket partnership by Josh Shaw and Jonathan Read who put on 40 runs in about an hour and a half and took the game into the final over of the third day before Lancashire clinched victory.
The Academy did manage to get a draw in the two day game with Scotland at Weetwood but then lost the one day contest on Thursday by a margin of 41 runs.
So a full house of defeats at all levels this week. However, again there were some good performances here when Scotland were pegged back from 161-1 to 262-7 in their first innings by some good bowling by the two young spinners Logan and Shutt.
Yorkshire's first innings was declared behind at 121-1 to try and get a result in two days. Ben Ainsley did well with an innings of 61 not out. Scotland then declared their second innings on 160-4 and again off spinner Shutt bowled well with 3-31. Yorkshire were set 300 to win in 70 overs and never really looked like getting them although captain Jared Warner played a fine innings of 83 not out, well supported by young Anjam, promoted from the under 17s, with 52. Final score 224-8 - match drawn.
The following day a one day 50 overs a side match was played between the same two teams, although Warner was rested. Scotland did well thanks to a century by Jones and totalled 256-7, Logan, Imtiaz and Taylor all taking two wickets each. Left hander Brown played a stubborn innings of 92 for the Academy and was unlucky not to make a century. He put on a century partnership with wicket keeper Read, who had swopped places with Birkhead, who travelled to Westhoughton for the second eleven one day game. Once these two were out the tail collapsed and Scotland won comfortably by 41 runs.
So with another defeat for the second eleven in the one day fixture with Lancashire at Westhoughton, Yorkshire's overall record for the week was played four, drawn one and lost three. Things can surely only get better! Hopefully the imminent return of long term injury victims Sidebottom and Fisher will improve the situation.
