THREE BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS IN A ROW

By Brian Sanderson,

Another Saturday tour and I met Ron Deaton at Weetwood. The Academy were playing Castleford with the home side batting first. Harry Brook on the far side went on to score 103 out of 233 for 5.

Castleford who included David Wainwright ex Yorkshire and Derbyshire as captain. He bowled 14 overs and was 63 not out.

The next ground we visited was Low Moor and this our third visit . The other two there was no play but today their first team were playing Old Crossleyans on a beautiful afternoon. You know you are in a proper cricket ground when you can see animals nearby.

Moving on up the Halifax Road we went to Shelf ground who were playing Low Moor 's second team. The home side put on a opening stand of 179 with the batsman above had scored 97.The ground is situated behind a public house.

It looked as if Low Moor would be beaten very easily.

Moving on to Outland which is situated next to the M62 so you have to shout to enable your friend to hear what you say.Today match they were playing Luddendenfoot in the Halifax  League Terry Wynne 2 Division.
It has fantastic views of Halifax. The home side reached 321 in their 45 overs with the opening bat scoring a century.

About a mile away is the ground of Blackley were their second team were playing Northowram Hedge Top.
I have visited this ground on numerous times but it was Ron's first visit and he thought it was one of the best grounds he visited in a long time. Again there are  great views and the ground is well kept and has numerous seats round the ground. There were two more beautiful grounds to come.

As you go round new grounds you do not know what you will meet.Upper Hopton is situated just outside Mirfield in the hills and the pitch is a bowl surrounded by trees. There seconds were playing Denholme Clough.

To get to the clubhouse you have to climb numerous steps  which is a site I have never seen before. As we were leaving the away side won the match by two wickets.

About a mile away is another beautiful ground Hopton Mills who have joined the Bradford League and were playing Carlton. So as we were walking round we met John Taplin for a short conversation. The history of the club can be found on the Bradford League website.

The home side won by two wickets but I would strongly recommend fellow professional cricket watchers to visit this ground

Hi - has anyone researched the history of the Briarcourt Cricket Club in Lindley, Huddersfield? According to the Romany Cricket Club website, games were played at Briarcourt in 1911.

Any further information about who played cricket at Briarcourt would be greatly appreciated.
