GROUNDS AROUND THE HUMBER BRIDGE

By Brian Sanderson,

After two days of cancelled cricket  due to rain,it was good to .be able to watch cricket in a little bit warmth.
At lunchtime myself,Ron Deaton and Nigel Pullan set off down the M62 towards Hull.

The first ground planned by Ron was Cottingham. There is two grounds next to each other.

On the main ground the seconds were playing Beverley thirds in the fourth division of the Holderness league. The opening bowler for the home side was a young woman who took two wickets while we were there.

Moving on about three miles we arrived at Kirkella ground which I visited about four years ago. Today their seconds were playing Cherry Burton Second team in the North Eastern Conference Division 2 . The latest twitter report says Cherry Burton scored 184 and the home side were 147 for 5 with seven overs to go.
On major change since I visited the ground was a new college been built near the ground.

Moving closier to the bridge we went to the Hessle ground which is situated near a B.X bike race track. That is a first for us to see this track. The club was established in 1838 so it is one of the oldest clubs in Yorkshire.Today their first team were been bowled out for 62 by Welton and Brough Second team This division is the third  Holderness league. The home side were beaten by 10 wickets. Home early for tea for them.

Moving back towards Leeds we went to North Ferriby which is situated next to the football ground. They were playing Eastrington in the division four of the Holderness league.Whilst we were there a home bowler took three wickets in four balls.

Moving further down the M62 we called in to see the grave of Sir F.S.Jackson ,ex Yorkshire player and England captain. The grave is started to be overgrown with Ash trees and is a terrible to look at.It deeds a lot of work on the grave and it deserves looking after.

The grave is about 200 yards from the Welton and Brough ground were their first were playing Hull Seconds in division two of the Holderness league. The ground was given to the club my the family  of Sir Jackson wife.
