FOUR MEN FROM THE WEST

By Brian Sanderson,

Another Saturday trip organised by Ron Deaton to Yorkshire East Coast grounds on a sunny day.The first new ground we went to was Scarborough College ground was is on the southside of Scarborough. The teams playing were Scarborough thirds against Rydale in the Scarborough Beckett League. It is a beautiful well kept ground which many private school grounds are and nice pavilion opposite the school. There are plenty of seats which allowed us to eat our sandwichs in comfort.

Moving on back towards Scarborough we went to the Oriel ground which is over one hundred years old.The teams were Valley Bar Nomads against Wykeham thirds. The ground is surrounded by Victorian houses and the ownership of the land is unknown. So all the upkeep of the ground is done by volunteers and the old pavilion was burnt down and has been replaced by a temporary  portacabin. So they is a lot of work required to keep cricket played at this old ground. Good luck to everybody  who are trying help to save the club.

Moving on down the coast to Filey who were playing Nawton Grange.  We saw Nawton a few weeks ago at their own ground. The ground is next to the railway line and is overlooked by a Tesco sign. The ground is also used for football and also looks like the local school use it.A functional ground but  we hoped there would be better views.

Moving on to the most scenic ground of the tour Sewerby which is situated next to the coast as shown by the above photograph. There is a new pavilion been built in 2007 in the old style which fits in with surroundings of the hall. There is also a second ground been established over the last few years  Here Sewerby thirds were playing Oriel. On the first ground Sewerby seconds were playing Brompton. We were able to get some cups of tea and some home-made cakes. There is numerous seats round the grounds and is worth visiting.

Moving down into Bridlington we went to Dukes Park were Bridlington Seconds and thirds were playing on two adjoining grounds. Here again a new pavilion has been built in front of a gas holder.Behind the ground is the Rugby Club and the Football club. The last time I was here over twenty-five years ago the Park had just  then one cricket pitch and a bowling green. How things change.

Took some beautiful photographs of the grounds and again I would advise cricket watchers to go to Sewerby and the Oriel grounds.

The other two people with us was Ron Stansfield and Nigel Pullen who kindly did the driviing.
