HISTORIC DAY AT HEADINGLEY IN THE SUNSHINE

By Brian Sanderson,

Second day of the championship match, I show some cricket memorabilia usually about the visiting club.
Thank you to Tony Hutton ,the two tables were full of memorabilia and we had a number of supporters come and have a look and talk about the items.

On the field Yorkshire as usual this season lost the first three wickets easily and they were 45 for 3.This allowed Joe Root and Johny Bairstow to come out early and entertain the large crowd. They did not disappoint.

By lunchtime Yorkshire had reached 173 for 3 with a very good run rate of 5.97. I watched the cricket from the shade of the Rugby stand which is due to knocked down in 2018 but we will see if it happens. There were numerous  Yorkshire records broken.

1- Hirst and Wainwright 5 th wicket partnership in 1899. which was the highest against Surrey.

2-Bairstow beat Sutcliffe highest score at Headingley against Surrey 176 in 1927.

3- Lehmann  and Lumb Yorkshire highest 5 th wicket partnership of 358.

After tea Bairstow was caught for 198 chasing a wide ball. from Burke. So their partnership finished on 372.

By the end of the day Joe Root looked very tired and was on 190 not out with Adil Rashid on 21  with Yorkshire 486 for 5. The two opening bowlers for Surrey Rampaul and Curran bowled 51 overs of the 98 bowled so they will be ready for a rest over night. You would think Yorkshire will bat on till they were all out tomorrow but rain is forecast on Wednesday.

Chapter three tomorrow.
