The Headingley Evening League T20 competition got off to a great start last night, despite very cold conditions for players and spectators alike. I was at Adel for their game with Shadwell, from the Wetherby League, at least until half time when the cold drove me indoors.
Shadwell batted first and their main man and star of the evening was New Zealander Tom Meyrick, who played for Wisbech Town in Cambridgeshire last season. He showed an ability to hit the ball a very long way in his splendid innings of 60 not out, hitting five sixes straight down the ground. Some of these landed in the tennis courts where players had to take evasive action to dodge some of the biggest hits seen on the ground for some time.
Even so the Shadwell innings rather collapsed towards the end of the twenty overs and the final total of 112-8 was no where near enough. Danny Ridgway and Gavin Thorpe claimed three wickets each and skipper Matt Kirkham took two. As the evening grew colder Adel had no trouble in knocking off the runs in 15 overs, thanks mainly to another good innings from a new young player Arjun Ramkumar with 29.
Even more big hitting elsewhere in the league and thanks to the league's excellent new website on ht20.play-cricket.com which had full results and scorecards posted very quickly. One of the biggest totals of the night was 219-2 in only 17 overs by Horsforth at New Rover where Gareth Lee scored an amazing 124 retired which included nine fours and no less than fourteen sixes. South African Byron Boshoff also made 71 before he retired. New Rover making 148-6 in reply.
However top score of the evening was by Leeds Modernians (no longer Old Modernians) with 237-2 in 20 overs. This time it was an Australian Nick Hydon who made a century, scoring 121 off only 51 balls against Cookridge in a real local derby as the two grounds are only a short walk apart. The visitors could only manage 132-9.
Finally spare a thought for Kirkstall Educational who managed a nine wicket victory in quick time over Horsforth Hall Park after yet another serious break in at their clubhouse, which was the fourteenth such event in only two years. Fortunately a lot of people are rallying round and already a donation to fund close circuit TV has been made. Lets hope they can finally catch the people responsible who are an insult to such a valuable community club where so much hard work has been put in over the years.
