EXCITING DAY AT HEADINGLEY

By Brian Sanderson,

I finished the  blog on Sunday looking forward to Monday but the cricket on that day only last thirteen overs before the rain stopped play for the day.

During that time Joe Root established his highest first class score of  213. Rashid and Plunkett brought the Yorkshire score to 557 for 6 with a lead of 227.

Next morning play did not start till 11.45 due to rain and that stage Yorkshire declared leaving Surrey a minimum of 84 overs to survive.  All together there had been 105.4 overs lost during the match but it did not stop it being exciting.

By lunch time Surrey had reached 72 for 2 with Kumar Sangakkara  batting well so Yorkshire had to take his wicket quickly.there was more rain after lunch which brought the minimum overs down to 55 overs.

Davies and Sangakkara put  on another century stand before Kumar was caught of Joe Root off-spin.This was the break through Yorkshire wanted. Gale had to go off the field after been hit close to the bat. Joe Root took over the captaincy.which was very important. He switch the bowling around and brought pressure on the batsmen by close fielders.

At tea Surrey were 172 for 6 in the 52 over and then after tea another four overs were lost which left a minimum of 21 overs .Pattinson  came on to bowl and claimed three wickets bring Surrey total to 205 for 9. There were then 10 overs left in the final hour and Yorkshire were 22 in front.

It was left to Plunkett wrap up the win with his second wicket by trapping Matt Dunn lbw. Those people who could not turned up today at Headingley missed a great match of cricket. Yorkshire are now top of Division one.
