FOUR MATCHES IN LEICESTERSHIRE

By Brian Sanderson,

On Saturday myself and Bob Procter set off to Knights Auction in Leicestershire  and on the way we went to see four matches in the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. This is a new league formed in 2014 from clubs in the Leicestershhire County Cricket League, Senior League and Cricket League. It consists of a Premier Division, Divisions 1 to 3 . Then Divisions 4 to 9 in sections East, Central And West. so there are 18 Divisions.

The first club we visited was Sileby which was established in 1895. The match was the home side second team against Kibworth Seconds. The club   with the aid of grants from the ECB built a new club recently and it look very modern with the church spire behind.  The  home side were batting  and they are in Division 1 of the league. The ground was very wet and it seems the field was flooded recently.

The club purchased a field next to the main square and the thirds were playing Maher Stars in Division 4 central. The facilities are very basic and the roller looks like it has not moved for a few years.

Moving on a few miles we found the Quorn ground who were playing Leicester Banks  in also the Division 4 Central League. Whilst walking round the ground I spoke to a ex-umpire who had stood with Dickie Bird.
Also he was coming up to Headingley on Thursday to see the Test Match. The home side was batting and scored 125 for 8 and I found out tonight the opposition scored 110  for 9.

The last ground visited was Barkby who play in the Premier League and were playing Leicester Ivanhoe.
This ground is very unusual as there are four oak trees in the playing area . As you can see from the photograph the boundary rope goes round the trees.. The away side scored 204 for 8  whilst the home team scored 207 for 8. A very picturesque ground which is worth a visit from the P.C.W. in the area.
