CHANCE TO SEE THE YORKSHIRE ACADEMY

By Brian Sanderson,

After some rain this morning I set off to York who were playing Yorkshire Academy in the second round of Yorkshire League Cup.At York you get a newsletter which has the team and found that York had a weaken side out. Dan Woods , captain and main wicket taker was playing for Cheshire . Nick Kay who took five wickets yesterday was also missing togther with Simon Lambert who scored 209 not out yesterday. There was a delayed start due to drizzle which gave me a chance to see York pink shirts. This is one of the disadvantages of the forty-five over match .Put they use a two pink balls which are easier to see.
Yorshire Academy were captain by Will Rhodes who was also Englands under 19 captain. This week he was awarded E.C.B.,s England Development Programme Cricketer of the Year Award at a special dinner held in the Long room at Lord,s.He did not disappoint us to-day by scoring 51 together with Hussain scoring 50 together with Ryan Gibson scoring 54. This helped the Academy to score 268 for 9 in the forty-five overs. The best York bowler was Ryan Mc Kendry taing 5 wickets for 51.
However the York fielding was poor and should have resticted the score by at least twenty runs.At half time Liam McKendry who had been wicket -keeper and opening bat swept the pitch while two people stood by toplay football on the square.
Because of the weak nature of the York side it was felt at teatime Academy had enough runs to win the match if they could take some early wickets. After 17 overs York were 65 for 3 with the match effective over. The only batsman to get any runs was Ryan McKendry 60 so he had a good match. This should make the Academy favorites to win the cup so we will see.To-morrow Yorshire Seconds are playing a fifty over match against Warwickshire at Pudsey Congs so hope the weather is warmer.
Will Rhodes at teatime.
