WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT SATURDAY ?

By Brian Sanderson,

Most leagues were playing their final fixtures of the summer so we decided to go to the Pontefract League. This league has 9 divisions and is based round Doncaster and it is a league I have not visited very often.

However the first match was Whitkirk Seconds against Bridlington in the York and District League. The start time was 11.50 and Bridlington players must have left home about 10 o,clock so it will be a long day for them. The picture above is of the Whitkirk flag pole with some nice flowers at the base. That is the best view of the ground now.

First match in the Pontefract League was at Ferrybridge who were playing Pledwick in the seventh division.Last year we called with Mick  Bourne  to see the ground but the old ground was closed and the new ground had not been opened. When you park the car you have to reverse in to the parking bay or you will get a stricker on your windscreen telling you off..It is a very nice new pavilion but with a very unusual outlook.
There is a sound of running water which makes it seem near a waterfall  but is the water from the chimney.
It reminded me of Hartlepool Power station ground.

Next match was at Fishlake were they were playing Ackworth. It is a large ground but no lake.
They play in the first division and there must have only fifteen people watching ,mainly Ackworth supporters. There should be more people watching two of the better side of the league.
Moving on to the Hatfield abd Spotbrough match. The ground is next to an old peoples home and one gentleman was watching the match outside. It has nice little pavlion with some good photographs of the 1960,s side.

Moving on to Barndy Dun and Askern both these matches were not played. Where it was from the rain yesterday or they could not be bothered to play,I do not know.

However moving on to the gem of the grounds at Hooton Pagnell were they were playing Streethouses. The ground is situated at the outskirt of the village with a rural outlook.
The first photograph I took there was a horse just going past the sightscreen.A sight you would have not seen at Ferrybridge. One down side of the ground there is no electricity and no gas in the old pavilion..This did not please the tea lady who had been doing for twenty years. However her comment was that the cricket had to continue in the village.

The last ground was Brodsworth Main  who were playing Hooton Pagnell seconds.
The ground is not in the village but at Woodlands, a few miles away. When you enter the car park you see this brillant building which now run down and Bingo at evenings. The ground is surround by railings and you can not bring the car into the ground.
There was a big contrast between the last two grounds.I now which ground I would like to have played my cricket on.

All this grounds will be closed for the winter and spectators will have to watch football twenty-four hours a day. However there is still Arthington next week-end  and also Yorkshire are at Headingley.

The Daily Telegraph have apolized for their error in printing yesterday.
