Cavaliers beat the rain
Posted by John Winn
The ghastly weather forecast persuaded me that a quiet Sunday at home was a better bet than travelling up the A1 on Sunday morning to watch the ECB Club KO final at The Riverside. At least those who braved the wind and rain saw a meaningful game of cricket rather than the bowl outs that decided the club T20 final at The Oval on Friday.
In yesterday's match rain and bad light brought Duckworth Lewis into play and the match was won by Nottingham based West Indian Cavaliers. Top scorer for the victors was Usman Afzaal who readers may recall won three caps for England against Australia in 2001 but whose first class career came to an end when he was released by Surrey in 2010.
The Lancashire twitter feed reports that in the second XI championship final at Radlett play has been abandoned for the day without a ball being bowled. Three days to go in that one.
Something of a tangled web seems to be being woven by the ECB's policy of resting players. Yorkshire's squad for the match at Headingley tomorrow does not include Joe Root but Ben Stokes will dash from Southampton to Chester le Street to be available for Durham against Notts. But it is at Trent Bridge where the oddest state of affairs is to be found with Broad and Swann being allowed to play in the YB final at Lord's on Saturday. Should they play then good luck to coach Mike Newell when he tells two players, bowlers presumably, that despite playing in the earlier matches they will be in charge of the Lucozade at HQ. The two England men will be at The Riverside tomorrow but not as part of the 14 man squad Notts have selected. Broad has not played in any limited over cricket for his county this season while Swann played in just two of the group matches.
