A Yorkshire victory recalled.

posted by John Winn

The Minor Counties Championship was won by Cheshire. Scores in the four day game at Wisbech were
Cheshire 372 for 9 and 303 for 5
Cambridgeshire 296 and 250 Cheshire won by 129 runs.

Brian has described his visit to Welbeck yesterday. The score when play was halted was Lancs 96 for 1 (or 90 for 1 if you prefer Notts' account of events). *

The Second XI Championship final will be played over four days at Radlett beginning on Monday with a 10:30 start . It will provide Lancs II with another final. Their opponents will be Middlesex II

A reminder that the Arthington Festival begins this Sunday when Romany CC will be the visitors. It is hoped to post the remaining fixtures early next week.

After a long spell away (over six weeks) Yorkshire return to first class action at Headingley next week when Middlesex are the visitors in the last home championship match of the season. Play begins at 10:30 on Tuesday. At the same time Durham will take on Notts at The Riverside. There is a three day friendly scheduled for Weetwood between Yorks II and Durham II, also beginning on Tuesday.

Finally most readers will have heard of Matthew Hoggard's retirement which is in the news this morning. Few will be surprised and already many tributes have been paid to Matthew. The announcement reminded me of the first time I saw him in action at May's Bounty, Basingstoke playing for Yorkshire v Hampshire in June 1999. I was present on the second day which began with Yorkshire on 62 for 3 in reply to Hampshire's first innings of 206 where Silverwood had had 5 for 43 Despite a stand of 88 for the seventh wicket between Blakey and Hamilton Yorkshire closed on 192. Wisden describe Hampshire's second innings batting as 'supine' and with Hoggard taking 4 for 45 they were all out 124 having been 59 for 8. I remember three splendid slip catches from David Byas and he top scored with 95  in Yorkshire's second innings as they won by six wickets on the third day. It was Hampshire's first defeat at Basingstoke since 1991. Their leading wicket taker in the match was Peter Hartley with 11 for 117 against his old county.

*Lancashire won by 76 runs. Lancs 259 for 7, Notts 183 all out
