MATCH WON BY A WIDE

By Brian Sanderson,

On a cold and wind swept morning at Weetwood Yorkshire over 17 were playing Durham under17 in a 50 over Cup match. Durham won the toss and decided to bat.As I arrived it started to rain and the umpires  decided to take the players off. There was a delay of about one hour eventhough the rain was no more than little drizzle. There was no reduction of overs and a finish due at 6.30 however the weather forecast predicted it to rain about 4.00.Yorkshire had a strong side out which include a number of players who played at Harrogate on Sunday. The wicket looked green and the ball was swinging causing problems all day.

By 1.00 Durham had lost three wickets mainly to M Waite who plays at Methley and looked a good swing bowler.I went tomy lunch at home and a chance to get warm together with something to eat. When I arrived back Durham were 70 for 7 and the wickets had been sprend out between the bowlers together with a run out. There was a good crowd eventhough the weather was poor including Tony Hutton and Brian Senior.

Soon the three wickets soon fell and Durham were all out for 90 so we retreated to the pub.Ryan Gibson opened the Yorkshire innings after his century on Sunday. To-day he scored 31 out of 37 so being the highest run scorer in the match.Wickets fell consistantly and Yorkshire required 7 runs with one wicket to go.Yorkshire were helped by a number of wides and the match was won by another wide.Rain was starting to fall.

Exciting match were 19 wickets fell and only 181 runs scored.Contrast to the Sri Lanka and West Indies match that I am watching were Tharanga is 174 not out.
