Yorkshire Seconds in 1997

By Brian Sanderson
Recently I purchased the above autograph sheet  of the Yorkshire Seconds who played Glamorgan Seconds on the 7-9 May 1997 at Ynysangharad Park Pontypridd. Among the signatures is Jamie Hood who was born in Saltburn on the 7 September 1976. Jamie had a short cricket careerbeing released by Yorkshire in July 1997 and then played a few matches for Nottingham Second Whilst in South Africa in 1998 he was involved in a car crash when a tyre blew out  and he was
badly injured which finished his cricketing career.

The captain of Yorkshire side was Richard Kettleborough who only played 54 first class matches with Yorkshire and Middlesex. He is better known now as a Elite Umpire. The highest scorer for Yorkshire in their second innings was Neil Russell from Middlebrough with 54 who again was released at then end of the season.

Also playing for Yorkshire was Alex Wharf when he was released
by in 1997 , he moved on via Nottingham to Glamorgan. Then in
2014 we was appointed as a first class umpire.

Another interesting Yorkshire player was Gareth Batty who only played one first class match for Yorkshire before moving to Surrey, Worcester and back to Surrey. He was still playing for Surrey last season.

Yorkshire lost the match by 111 runs mainly due to Michael Powell century for Glamorgan

Top of the Yorkshire seconds averages was Kettleborough with an average of 54.86 mainly due to a 173 not out against Leicestershire at Oakham School. I went to that match on the second day and got caught in a thunderstorm in the afternoon. The top wicket taker was Ian Fisher with 48 wickets. Ian now is involved with Yorkshire first team as trainer.

Yorkshire finished  second in the Second Team Championship with Lancashire Seconds top who were captained by Peter Sleep.
