Who is Gerald Hare ?

By Brian Sanderson

On the 30th May 1956 at Ashbrooke Sunderland, Yorkshire started a three day match with Durham. Unlike the year before they put out a strong side apart from one player, Gerald Hare. He played in a second team match at Settle against Cumberland in which he batted eleven and opened the bowling taking one wicket in the match. So nothing special

Above is a photograph of the 1956 side including Trueman but in
May he was injured. So Hare took his place.

As you will see from the autograph sheet Gerald signed in pencil
 on the bottom right.

Durham batted first with Gerald opening the bowling with Bob Appleyard,.He took three wickets for sixty one runs in twenty one overs. He was equal top wicket taker with Johnny Wardle . Durham side included C.S.Nayudu who was a Indian leg break bowler and this was his only season with Durham.
He scored 51 in a first innings total of 248. He injured his hand when Yorkshire were batting in their first innings so was unable to bowl in the Yorkshire second  innings.

Yorkshire scored 253 in their first innings with Billy Sutcliffe top scoring with 68. In the second innings Ray Illingworth scored 146 not out in a total of 346 for 6 wickets. So Gerald did not have
to bat.

In Durham second innings he bowled seven overs and took one wicket. Durham were bowled out at 4.30 on third day with Appleyard and Wardle taking nine wickets. So Yorkshire won by 156 runs.

I can not find any other match Hare played in so would be interested to find out any more details about him.
 Another mystery.player.
