Yorkshire cricket in 1887.

By Brian Sandeson

Before the lockdown  started I went to Book Fair at Harrogate and purchased this Committee members ticket for Yorkshire Cricket Club. This is a most unusual ticket which I have never
seen before and will go into Yorkshire Cricket Museum
.

The ticket belonged to R.Gillett who was an ex-player of Sheffield United.
The Secretary of the club was J.B.Wostinholm who held the job till 1902 and Yorkshire cricket was based at Bramall Lane Sheffield. The first match of importance was played here was Yorkshire v Sussex in 1855.One of the Sussex players spoke of it "It is one of the finest grounds in England "

1887 was a batting year when Yorkshire scored 590 against Lancashire and 559 against Kent. In this match Ulyett, Hall and Lee scored centuries Ulyett scored the highest innings of his career,199 not out against Derbyshire. At Bradford he and Hall won the Sussex match by scoring 142 in the second innings neither being out. At Sheffield Lord Hawke won the Kent match by a drive which sent the ball out of the ground. Yorkshire occupied the fifth place among nine counties, although they only suffered three defeats.Hunter was the keeper and took nine catches against Gloucestershire.

The President of the club was M.J.Ellison (above). It will never be known to what extent his purse was placed at the disposal of the county club, he would never let it be known. But it is a open secret that he was  financially responsible for the cricket in those days. He was President till 1898.
