Looking through the Wisden magazines I found some photographs of Maurice Leyland bowling in the nets. He was born in Harrogate on the 20 July 1900.One of the best left-handed batsman ever to
play for Yorkshire, not to mention England.
Leyland's bowling may well have been used more often but for the presence of Wilfred Rhodes and Hedley Verity in the Yorkshire side. He was good enough however to take five wickets in an innings
on ten occasions. His mixture of the orthodox with chinaman and googley brought him over 50 wickets in a season three times and a hat-trick against Surrey in 1935.
His best bowling figures were against Hampshire at Fartown in 1938 were he took 8-63. His best Test Match bowling figures were in Cape Town in 1931, taking 3 for 91.
Tony Woodhouse says in his book Yorkshire Cricketers that he copied from Roy Kilner.
