Wilfred's Final Test Match

The first three Test matches on the 1929-30 tour of the West Indies left the two sides equal with one win apiece and one drawn. The fourth match started on the April 3rd 1930 with Calthorpe winning the toss and deciding to bat. The side was G.Gunn, A.Sandham Mr R.E. Wyatt, E.Hendred,.L.Ames J O'Connor, Hon F.SCalthorpe Mr N.Haigh W.E.Astill, W .Rhodes W .Voce
After the first day M.C.C were 289-1 with Sandham 151 not out.Second day M.C.C were 700-4 with Sandham 309 not out Third day M.C.C were 849 all out with Sandham scoring a World
Record score of 325 which lasted four months before Bradmanbeat it. The score was the highest score then by England Test side beating 636 . Sandham batted for ten hours .West Indies were 141-3
Fourth day West Indies had been bowled out for 283. For some reason Calthorpe decided not to enforce the follow on.So M.C.C batted again to score 121-4 by the end of the day.
Fifth day M.C.C. declared at 272-9 .Setting a target of 849.West Indies finished on 140-1There was talk of calling the match a draw but they played on for a result.
Sixth day West Indies scored 408-4 with George Headley batting for six hours and a half and hitting twenty-eight fours, The match had to be called a draw due to rain and the English team had
to catch the boat. They arrived back on the 27 April. Wilfred's next match was on the 10 May against the Australians at Sheffield.
Whilst there were Test matches being played in New Zealand and West Indies there were two other English sides touring. Sir Julien Cahn'sside in Argentine and Hubert Martineau's side were playing in Egypt.Those were the days to play cricket and see the Empire and beyond.
