TODAY ROOT AND BAIRSTOW STAR
By Brian Sanderson,
The forecast was sunny and getting cloudy in the afternoon and this was the case.To-day I spent most of the day with Brian Workman who I know through Wombwell Cricket Society.Yesterday we wondered how many Hughes would score .To-day was Root turn to star batting. He had a poor start in the morning when he ran out Jaques when he was on 39.Soon after Gale took thirty minutes to be caught of Wainwright who seemed pleased with the result.I thought Wainwright bowled very well through the day and having to bowl over forty overs when Palladno was unable to bowl.
Root and Bairstow put on a stand of 231 which beat the previous highest fourth wicket partnership against Derbyshire of Vic Wilson and Willie Watson in 1951 not 1961 as it states on the Yorkshire web-site.Root was out bowled by Daniel Redfern which was his seventh Championship wicket when he was 236 which is Championship highest score. He scored twenty-four fours.
Bairstow joined him in the record partnership and was caught out on the boundary going for another six.His score was 186 however they were unble to get the final batting point so finished on a total of five.In the last thirty overs Yorkshire scored 212 to bring their total to 597 for 5.This beats the last highest score against Derbyshire in 2005 of 570.
In the morning Ballance and Rashid will have to try and build a total over two hundred and then hope to bowl Derbyshire out. However on this flat wicket a draw still looks like the result.
The photograph is of Joe Root in a Yorkshire sweater which in the future may be rare as England will tell Yorkshire when he can play.
