SIX HOURS OF YORKSHIRE CRICKET

By Brian Sanderson,

Another organised trip by Ron Deaton to North Yorkshire on a sunny morning. We sent off up the A19 to Nawton which is just outside Helmsley who were playing Brompton. This fixture is in the Beckett League Division A .

The ground is situated next to the main Scarborough road and is a multisports complex. The first bowler we saw was Nick Thornicroft ex England under19 and Yorkshire. The last time we saw him was in a cup final at Duncumbe Park last season and this time he took two wickets in two balls. He looked to quick for the batsmen and wicket-keeper who had arrived late.

Next match was at Kirby Moorside which is the next village and they were playing Fixton in the Becketts Premier League. The ground is again situated off the Scarborough road and is shared with the football side.By this time the a cold wind had got up and dark clouds had arrived. It seem like winter again.

The next ground was the jewel of thr trip which was Hovington where the second X1 were playing Cawood in the York and District 6 th Division. The ground is outside the Worsley house as shown in the above picture and we were able to obtain a cup of tea. There are numerous photographs in the new pavilion going back to 1900.Worsley was  captain of  Yorshire in 1928 and 1929.This ground is typical of country house cricket.

Moving on to another multisport ground at Stillington who were playing Selby Londsborough Second X1 in the York and District 5 th Division. It is a very large field were new drainage had been put down as last year we visited the ground to find it water-logged.

Next match was Huby Second X1 against New Earswick Second  X1 in the 7 th Division. The pavilion had windows broken and grills on those not broken. Quite a contrast to Hovingham.

We tried to watch South Kilvington but the were just leaving the patch after beating Sharow Third X1. So we moved up the A19 to Leake ground were Thirsk Third X1 were playing as Leake only play mid-week matchs. A new pavilion  and the pitch had only recently been laid and the temperature was freezing.

The last match was Sharow against Bolton Bridge in the Nidderdale League. The home side were batting a chasing 196 and when we arrived  they were five wickets down requiring abot 60 runs to win in ten overs.
The match went down to the last over with Bolton Abbey winning the match by cleaning bowling the number eleven batsman.

A excellent seven hours of cricket which covered all different matches in different leagues.
